I've been tempted as of late to write an experience point/level system for Call of Cthuhlhu. For those of you not familiar with Call of Cthuhlhu or the BRP system it runs on character advancement works as thus: At the end of each adventure you have a chance to increase each skill you successfully used during that adventures. The chance your skill will go up is inversely proportional to the amount you already have in the skill. I like this as I find this rewards player creativity. . NOTE: value entered into this field must be a 'rollable' value (i.e. either a whole number 15, or a dice formula 1d6). If there are costs of the spell not strictly expressible as a numerical value, it is advised that you enter this information into the 'Other Costs' field, instead. See below for further details
Edward Pierce starts the game with level three in investigation, and the next level can take up most of your initial CP. So, it's okay to not put all your points into this skill at the beginning. As you progress though, you should be aiming to get this skill as high as possible in order to learn more from investigating crime scenes Call of Cthulhu (2018) features an immersive and deep dialogue tree system, allowing you to deal with every situation in the game in a variety of manners. With this Tree System and the new Upgrade. If you roll under your skill level, roll damage. If you roll under 1/5 of your skill level, roll damage twice. If your HP hit zero, you're dead in one round unless someone First Aids you. Sanity: When a Sanity roll is called for, roll d100 against your current SAN score. If you fail, lose SAN. If you succeed, lose less SAN. If you lose more than 5 points in one go, go temporarily insane. If you lose more than 1/5 of your total SAN in one go, go indefinitely insane. If you hit 0. As an aside, it is worth noting that Character Development in Call of Cthulhu is very weak. Skills only increase marginally over time and Sanity is guaranteed to diminish. I usually warn my players that, unlike most other RPGs, Characters in CoC do not improve and, in fact, they will significantly decline over time. As they lose more and more Sanity, they will literally go mad, and many Mythos monsters have damaging effects that are permanent
Call of Cthulhu deliberately establishes skill breaks for expertise for certain skills. 50% is considered Professional. By the time you have invested enough in a skill to have it at 50% or higher, you essentially are granted skill-specific professional perks with it I even spent an awful lot of CP to upgrade the skill and every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lock is too hard. So thanks for wasting my skillpoints and make the game even more boring than it already is. Lock picking is the worst skill. Psych, spot hidden and strength are the ones that are best
Call of Cthulhu is a skill-based system with a focus on character development and simple but evocative mechanics. I had largely given over my inquiries into what Professor Angell called the Cthulhu Cult, and was visiting a learned friend in Paterson, New Jersey; the curator of a local museum and a mineralogist of note. Examining one day the reserve specimens roughly set on the storage shelves in a rear room of the museum, my eye was caught by an odd picture in one of the old papers spread beneath. While Dungeons & Dragons is a game of monster-slaying and high adventure, Call of Cthulhu is a game of investigation, exploration and gathering clues to unravel a mystery.
